About this quiz
ideoMap is a free, 2-to-5-minute quiz available in English and Hindi. It helps you reflect on your own political views and compare them with friends and family.
How it works
You choose the length. The Quick quiz has 12 questions, three in each of four areas. The In-depth quiz has 24, six in each area, so every area score rests on twice as many answers. The first 12 questions are the same in both, so after question 12 of the Quick quiz you can see your result straight away or carry on to 24. Every question has its own answer choices, from one end of the debate to the other, and each comes with a short note on the history and research behind it. The four areas are:
- Economy (Equality ↔ Markets): how much the government should own, plan, tax and redistribute, versus leaving things to free markets and private enterprise.
- Society (Progress ↔ Tradition): whether customs around caste, religion, family and gender should be reformed or preserved.
- Civil liberties (Liberty ↔ Authority): free speech, privacy, protest and policing, versus a strong state that keeps order.
- World politics (Global ↔ National): immigration, trade, international law, war and climate, from global cooperation to "nation first".
Each answer scores from −2 to +2, and each area is scaled from −100 to +100 whichever length you choose. Your overall Left–Right position is 50% economics and 50% the average of the other three areas. This follows a common model in political science: an economic dimension plus a cultural "GAL–TAN" dimension (Green/Alternative/Libertarian versus Traditional/Authoritarian/Nationalist).
Your result is the closest of 16 ideologies, from communism and democratic socialism through centrism and classical liberalism to conservatism and nationalism. For your ideology and for each area, the result page shows one historical example of that position at its best and one cautionary example of it going wrong. These examples are there to help you think, not to praise or condemn anyone.
Our commitment to neutrality
This quiz is not affiliated with, funded by or endorsing any political party, candidate, government body or organisation. Questions and answer choices are written to present every side of each debate fairly, and every result is described respectfully. It is a simplified model meant for fun and self-reflection — real political views are far richer than four numbers.
